Communicating with family and friends is easy with REACH. REACH speaks as you type or after you're finished typing. You can highlight text virtually anywhere on the screen and have it read back to you. What's more, you can use REACH's new Smart Speech add-on to use the ultimate in augmentative communication. What is Smart Key Technology™?

Smart Keys is an add-on feature for REACH Interface Author. Smart Keys also is a built-in feature for the new "Sounds Like" - Spell, Write™ program.

An Example:

Let's say you want to type the word "friend". First, you type the letter 'f'. REACH then removes all letters that don't follow an initial 'f'. In this example, many letters are removed! Type the letter 'r' and your keyboard now only shows letters that follow 'fr', and so on…

Smart Keys makes typing easier because there is less clutter on the keyboard and targets are easier to find. Moreover, if you're scanning then Smart Keys can help even more because REACH doesn't waste your time by offering you letters that don't make sense.

As you can see from the above example, Smart Keys can make a big difference in how you type.

Reduce Eye Fatigue

One of the reasons Smart Keys makes typing easier is that it makes it easier to find the letter you're after - because there are fewer to sort through. With Smart Keys it is almost impossible to misspell a word! The reason is that Smart Keys removes all the letters that don't follow any word that is in the dictionary.

Smart Keys Helps with Spelling

Smart Keys can help people with spelling difficulties by reducing the number of letters available to only those which are reasonable given the letters that already have been typed.

Smart Keys Helps with Targeting

Our users who use head trackers have reported that they love Smart Keys because it helps them with accuracy. This is because when Smart Keys removes keys, it creates dead space around the remaining keys - one of which is the correct key. If they aim at the correct key and miss it, the click can land on the dead space instead of another key - which would have been a wrong key if Smart Keys hadn't removed it. That would have produced a typing error that they then would have to correct by clicking on the Backspace key.

REACH with Smart Keys: the Scanning Advantage

Scanning is a terribly slow method for entering text, but because of physical mobility issues, it often is the only option some users have. With Smart Keys, users can improve their typing rate, and anything that can improve the typing rate is worth considering.

Improve Typing Rate

Scanning involves using a method where the computer highlights a row or block of keys and then continues to advance through the keyboard offering another row or block. The user typically operates a simple switch to select the row or block of keys that contains the target letter. Next, the computer proceeds to highlight each key in that row, one at a time until the user operates the same switch to select the letter to be typed.

This is where Smart Keys saves time, by eliminating the unlikely keys, Smart Keys can drastically improve a user's typing rate. In a research study conducted by Applied Human Factors, typing rate was found to increase 41% when using Smart Keys.
