How can REACH Help with Learning Disabilities and Education?

REACH has a variety of features that can be used to help people with learning disabilities, both educationally and practically. As an example, your goal might be to encourage a child to use the on-screen keyboard by using a touch screen with REACH (or mouse or whatever is appropriate for the individual you have in mind). You might start by helping the child get used to a keyboard with just a few keys on the keyboard to choose from. You can use REACH's Keyboard Author feature to make a keyboard with just a few large keys on it. Then, on each key, you can put a picture of an animal and record a corresponding sound that will be played when the child touches or clicks on that key.

Because REACH keyboards are so easily customized, it is easy to imagine how you can get REACH to become a springboard for more sophisticated communication approaches.

Spelling and Writing Difficulties - Introducing the Sound-It-Out Keyboard Pack

Sound-It-Out is our REACH keyboard pack built on "Sounds Like" phonetic typing technology (patent pending).

This keyboard pack allows someone to spell out words phonetically. Each key represents a phonetic sound - sounds that a person can learn to associate with letters in the alphabet. You can point at a key and Sound-It-Out will play the sound that key represents along with a word clue - for example, it might say "buh, bus" for the sound associated with the letter "b."

Once you find the desired sound, you click on that key and Sound-It-Out will start building your word choices in the word prediction bar. This add-on can improve a user's spelling and encourage them to write even more. In research conducted by AHF, we found this approach improved spelling accuracy in children with spelling disabilities by over 150%!
